In many traditional Asian societies, there is still hesitancy to putting the elderly in geriatric nursing homes while there is more acceptance of this idea in the Western world. Mostly, it is an Asian cultural perspective that when one is raised by their elders, it is an obligation to repay the elderly by caring for them. Many a times, a traditional Asian elderly may feel neglected or betrayed leading to emotional trauma at the prospect of being put in a nursing home. It is the strong concept of “familism”, fear of a new unknown environment where they lack control of, and also the sensitive issue of feeling like being thrown out of their homes.

Yet, there are factors that may also show that Geriatric Nursing home may be a better choice in terms of logical explanations and health issues. If an elderly is in need of special care, that may be a good reason for them to choose staying in a nursing home where they will have special attention and care for professional nurses and car providers that know what they are doing.

Although, if the elderly is more comfortable with their environment at home as it is and is more emotional secure, it may also be a good option, if available and a possible solution, to employ live-in nurses to tend to the elderly at home.
