    Dental Restorations

    Amalgam Fillings Dental Illustration

Dental restorations can be divided into two broad types; direct restorations and indirect restorations. Direct restorations are fillings placed immediately into a prepared cavity in one single visit. They include most composite fillings and dental amalgam. Indirect restorations usually require a few visits at the dentist. These include procedures such as inlays, onlays, veneers, bridges and crowns.

    The Dental Filling Procedure

The dentist starts with evaluating the patient’s teeth, gum and supporting bone structure. After identifying the damaged tooth surface removes it with a dental hand-piece or laser. When the area is cleaned from bacteria and debris the dentist isolate the tooth. This is a very important part of the procedure since it prevents moisture from interfering with the bonding process. After placement of various adhesives the filling material is placed and hardened. Thereafter, the dentist will polish the area to make a smooth surface. Dental fillings do not last forever, however the condition of the filling highly correlates to the patient’s dental care and dental hygiene. Amalgam has an average lifespan of 12.8 years, and composite fillings for 7.8 years
