    Cataract Surgery

Cataract eye Surgery IllustrationWhat are Cataracts?

Cataracts are conditions where the lenses of the eyes becomes cloudy, fuzzy, or foggy do to a buildup of opaque film in the eyes and can cause a change in the way one sees color or cause double vision. Those with cataract may also have problems driving at night because of problems with glares and headlight brightness.

Those with cataract may also have problems driving at night because of problems with glares and headlight brightness. Cataract surgery is when the lenses of the eyes are removed because it has become impaired do to the development of opacity.

    Extracapsular Cataract

In extracapsular cataract, the lenses of the eyes are removed but the elastic posterior capsule is left intact. Risks and complications of cataract surgeries includes the development of posterior capsular opacification, lowered visual accuracy, posterior capsular tear, retinal detachment, toxic anterior segment syndrome, endophthalmitis infection, or Glaucoma.

    Common Types of Cataract Surgery

There are two common types of cataract surgery called phacoemulsification (phaco) and conventional extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE). In extracapsular cataract, the lenses of the eyes are removed but the elastic posterior capsule is left intact.

    Types of Cataract Surgery

    Phacoemulsification (Phaco)

Phacoemulsification is the more common of the two methods and uses ultra sonic equipment with a steel tip to emulsify the lense with ultrasonic frequency. After, a dual irrigation-aspiration probe or bimanual I-A system is used to remove the peripheral cortical material.

    Conventional Extracapsular Cataract Extraction (ECCE)

A conventional extracapsular cataract makes an incision in the cornea or the sclera and is usually used for patients with cases of very hard cataracts or when phacoemulsification may not be an option because of complications.

    Intracapsular cataract extraction (ICCE)Chiropractic Treatment

In Intracapsular cataract extraction, the lenses are removed entirely with the lens capsule around them and are replaced by a synthetic plastic lens that is inserted in the anterior chamber or sewn into the sulcus.

    Vitreo-Retinal Surgery

Vitreo-Retinal Surgery is a type of eye surgery that is used to treat or prevent cataracts and other diseases that involves the vitreous humour and retina. Disorders treated by Vitreo-Retinal Surgery include diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, ocular tumor, inflammatory ocular conditions, hereditary retinal diseases, and other highly complex disorder. It can be performed with local or general anesthesia.

    Cryoextraction

Cryoextraction uses cryogenic essence such as liquid nitrogen to freeze the lenses so that they canbe extracted with a cryoprobe that contains a refrigerated tip that sticks to and freezes the tissue of the lenses so that the lenses can be extracted.
