    Gum Surgery

Gum surgery is surgery concerning gum areas to strengthen gums or teeth. The gum provides a fixture for the teeth in the mouth and as you grow older or for hygienic reasons, the gums start to recede giving an effect of making your teeth look much longer. It can also expose some roots surfaces, which can make eating or drinking hot, cold, or sour food or drinks more painful. Cosmetic dentistry can recommend the use of crowns, veneers, or composite resin bonding to increase strength of the gum or teeth.

There are usually two main procedures for cosmetic gum surgery including “gummy smile” (excessive gingival display) and “long Tooth smile” (gun recession).

    Gummy Smile (Excessive Gingival Display)

Gummy Smile is when your gums look too large in comparison to your teeth as a result of the wearing of teeth from teeth grinding.
Cosmetic gum surgery is then performed to remove the excess gum tissues and bones usually with a laser to give the gum line a normal appearance. Afterwards, an antibacterial mouth rinse is given to be used twice a week to protect from the building up of bacteria and plague.

    Long Tooth Smile (Gum Recession)

Long Tooth Smile or gum recession is when your teeth appears to be longer than it should due to the receding of the gum, which can result in more than just aesthetic issues but also in health issues where the sensitive root surface of the gums are exposed causing pain when eating cold or hot or sour food or even tooth loss. Cosmetic surgery for Long Tooth Smile involves theremoval of tissues from the roof of the mouth and transplanting it to the gum line so that the tissue reinforces the gum area where recession has occurred.
