Plastic Surgery
Plastic surgery derives from the Greek word plasticos, meaning to shape or to mold. These elective treatments are done to improve the physical appearance of the body, and to correct its form and function.
The field is generally divided into reconstructive surgery and body modification (also called cosmetic surgery).
Reconstructive surgery seeks to correct any physical feature or function of a body part that is grossly deformed or abnormal by accepted standards. It is also concerned with improving the function of the particular body part. The most common reconstructive procedures are laceration repair, tumor removal, breast reduction and scar repair.
Body modification seeks to improve the patient's features only on an aesthetic level, with breast augmentation, liposuction and eyelid surgery being some of the most popular procedures.
